FATTOUH: BANKS ARE THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST MONEY LAUNDERING & TERRORIST FINANCING

Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Banks, Wissam Fattouh, considered that banks and financial institutions are the first line of defense to combat money laundering and terrorist financing crimes, provided that they possess the resources, experience and sufficient and deep knowledge of mechanisms and channels in this regard. In his delivered speech at the opening of the activities of the annual forum of compliance managers in Arab banks, entitled “Enhancing the effectiveness of the role of the private sector in combating money laundering and financing terrorism”, held in Egypt’s Hurghada region, Fattouh affirmed that “the Union attaches great importance to combating money laundering and financing terrorism, given its seriousness on banks and the economy all over the world.’ ‘Banking services and products, which are constantly evolving, branching and complex, may provide more opportunities for perpetrators of financial crimes,” he said. “While banks are the most targeted for financial crimes and money laundering, they are at the same time the principle means for combating it,’ Fattouh went on, noting that the main objective of organizing such activities and events is “to show developments in the field of combating money laundering and terrorist financing and to learn about the new international rules in this field.” “We emphasize the significance of strengthening existing cooperation between the public and private sectors, including cooperation with Arab financial institutions, with the aim of protecting the Arab banking sector and maintaining relations between banks against this scourge,” Fattouch underlined. He concluded by considering that ‘the forum represents an important annual platform to discuss the risks that societies face as a result of financial crimes and their impact on the stability of financial systems.”

Gov’t approves establishing public sector performance monitoring unit

The government approved Sunday the mandating reasons for a draft amending the administrative organisation bylaw of the Ministry of Justice for 2023. The draft amended bylaw aims to enhance the monitoring and evaluation of government performance as part of the vision of economic modernisation for 2023-2025 by establishing a government performance and monitoring unit in the Ministry of Justice. The Cabinet approved including development cities as beneficiaries of the project to stimulate agricultural industries in the industrial cities. The Cabinet appointed Jamal Qutaishat Secretary-General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

Jordan News Agency organises AI course in its offices

The Training Centre of the Jordan News Agency is holding a three-day training course entitled “Employing Artificial Intelligence in Journalism and Media Work.” The course, which started Sunday, would familiarise journalists with the latest developments in the digital world, urging them to use and improve artificial intelligence tools in journalistic work. The course includes defining generative artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence tools and the capabilities of artificial intelligence in journalism and media. The Director of Institutional Development and Training in the agency, Jamil Baramawi, said Petra “is keen to keep pace with the development in digital technology and the uses of AI in media.”

Jordan election commission chairman, Canadian envoy talk cooperation

The Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Musa Maaytah, and the Canadian Ambassador, Tariq Ali Khan, held discussions Sunday in Amman on cooperation. According to the commission’s statement, the meeting focused on the IEC’s plans and goals in light of its readiness to hold the next parliamentary elections by the valid election law and what it includes of a local list and a national list dedicated to political parties. Maaytah said the IEC has started with technical and logistical preparations to reach “so that the upcoming elections will be a turning point in the history of the Jordanian state in the democratic path.” Maaytah and Khan discussed cooperation in implementing projects related to the political empowerment of women and youth and the promotion and empowerment of the role of political parties through an initial stage represented by signing a joint agreement between the IEC and the Canadian Federations Forum.

Iraq, NATO talk cooperation to counter terrorism

Iraq and NATO discussed Sunday cooperation and the development of the Iraqi army’s capabilities in countering terrorism. The Iraqi Defence Minister, Thabet Abbasi, stated after a meeting with the commander of the NATO mission in Iraq, Jose Antonio, that Iraq “needs” to discuss cooperation, coordination and expansion of partnership at the level of training with NATO.

Jordan, Qatar foreign ministers talk cooperation, regional developments

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Qatar’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, held talks Sunday in Doha on cooperation and regional developments. Safadi and Sheikh Mohammed discussed ways to expand cooperation in the economic and investment fields, increase trade exchange and activate the joint investment fund that the two countries agreed to establish in 2009 at a value of $2 billion. They agreed to convene the Joint Higher Committee before the end of 2023 and to sign agreements that strengthen the legislative frameworks to increase cooperation in investment. Safadi affirmed Jordan’s appreciation for QaQat’s support to the Jordanians, who numbered 70,000, after about 15,000 Jordanians started working in Qatar in the context Sheikh Tamim Al Thani’s initiative to provide 20,000 job opportunities in 2018. EXchange between Jordan and Qatar increased from $163 million in 2021 to $2011 million in 2022, achieving a growth rate of about 29 per cent. The volume of trade exchange between the two countries in the first quarter of 2023 amounted to $58 million. The number of Qatari tourists also increased from 8,907 in 2021 to 14,241 in 2022, while Qatari investments amounted to about $2 billion. Safadi and Sheikh Mohammed discussed the continuation of the high level of coordination regarding Arab, regional and international issues. They discussed stopping the escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and achieving calm, a step towards re-launching negotiations to realise peace based on the two-state solution. They stressed the “need” to stop all illegal Israeli measures that would undermine the two-state solution. The top diplomats warned of the repercussions of the deterioration, the absence of political prospects and the economic pressures in the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel’s continuation in building and expanding settlements, confiscating Palestinian lands and expelling Palestinians from their homes. Sheikh Mohammed discussed Jordan’s ‘historical” role in protecting sanctities in occupied Jerusalem. Safadi and Sheikh Mohammed stressed the “importance” of achieving Palestinian national reconciliation. Safadi noted Qatar’s role and support for Palestinians in Gaza and for the UNRWA. They stressed the need to implement the Amman Declaration, and to take “concrete” practical steps to address the consequences of the humanitarian, security and political crisis to end the crisis and the threats it produced to the security of the region, including drug smuggling. Safadi and Sheikh Mohammed discussed the efforts exerted to solve the Yemeni and Libyan crises, and to support stability in Lebanon. They stressed the importance of activating joint Arab action in efforts to resolve regional crises and advance Arab and Islamic interests.
