South Sudan is encouraging regional support to help end the stalemate in Sudan’s peace process, a presidential advisor said.
Speaking to Sudan Tribune on Thursday, Tutkew Gatluak Manime said consider the Gulf and Middle East as key player in Sudan’s peace process.
“The role of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, and United Arab Emirate is crucial. These countries are special relations with not only the Sudanese people as individuals, and companies but also the leadership. They respect and listen to the leadership in these countries. This is why his Excellency the president of the republic General Salva Kiir Mayardit appreciate and solicits their role in the Sudanese peace process”, he said.
Gatluak cited the important role Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar played in the Darfur peace process since 2011, stressing they offered themselves as hosts because of concerns from western countries that South Sudan lacks the financial capacity to support the peace process.
South Sudan is one of the countries in the region which has been playing a role to ensure peace and stability returns to Sudan so that the two countries embark on a shared vision that advocates cooperation for the viability of the two states.
It mediated peace talks between the government and the Sudan Revolutionary Front, a coalition of the rebel groups from the restive region of Darfur and other parts of Sudan. President Salva Kiir and members of his administration have repeatedly declared their commitment to continue to support the Government of Sudan and the Parties to the Juba Peace Agreement in working together to deliver their vision for lasting peace as part of the democratic transition agreed in 2019.
Many analysts have always emphasized that sustainable peace in Sudan will require dedicated Sudanese-led efforts to implement the Juba Peace agreement in a timely manner if it is aspired to see all the benefits of the peace agreement from equitable development, a new constitution, equal citizenship, and the opportunity to choose a democratically elected government.
Kiir, working with Sudanese leaders and partners through his adviser and other team members in the peace process, looks forward to continuing sustained support with the region, the parties, and all Sudanese in the realization of lasting peace.
