Former rebels meet to discuss roadmap to end Sudanese crisis

The Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) will hold a meeting on Wednesday in Ad Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile region, to discuss a roadmap to end the political crisis in Sudan.

The alliance of the former armed groups led by Hadi Idris is part of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition, which al-Burhan dissolved their transitional government after his coup of October 2021. However, they kept their positions in the transitional government in accordance with the Juba peace agreement.

The coup put the peace partners in an uncomfortable position some of them proposed quitting the government while others said such a move means returning to war.

The SRF leaders after several consultations and preparatory meetings, the alliance will hold a three-day retreat in Ad Damazin to discuss “SRF’s vision on the political crisis in the country” the alliance leader Hadi Idris and member of the Sovereign Council told the Sudan Tribune on Wednesday.

Idris added that the meeting will also assess the implementation of the Juba peace agreement and the SRF political discourse.

The meeting will be attended by two other members of the Sovereign Council Malik Agar SPLM-N leader and Tahir Hajar GSLF leader, North Darfur Governor Nimr Abdel Rahman, Blue Nile region Governor Ahmed Alomda, Federal Government Minister Buthaina Dinar, Minister of Urban Development, Abdallah Yahya, besides the leaders of the Beja Congress faction, Kush Movement, and Sudan Liberation Movement led by Mustafa Tambour.

Osama Said, SRF Spokesperson and the Beja Congress leader in a statement extended the Sudan Tribune said the three-day retreat would discuss justice issues, constitutional declaration, general elections, Foreign Policy and SRF organizational structure.

“The Revolutionary Front will come out with an integrated vision through which it will contribute to finding solutions to the current political crisis,” stressed the statement.

The SRF leaders condemned the coup of Gen al-Burhan and called for the restoration of the FFC government. However, they faced criticism for their continued partnership with the coup leaders who are responsible for the killing of peaceful anti-coup protesters.

The meeting is expected to choose a new secretary-general as Gibril Ibrahim JEM defected from the alliance and supported the military coup together with SLM leader Minni Minnawi.
