May 27, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The head of the Sovereign Council and the ruling coalition Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) Thursday agreed to foster the civilian-military partnership to achieve democratic transition in Sudan.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and an FFC delegation led by Fadlallah Burma Chairman of the National Umma Party held a meeting to discuss political developments and challenges facing the transition two years after the collapse of the al-Bashir regime.
Following the meeting, the FFC’s Rapporteur Kamal Bolad stated that they thoroughly discussed the challenges facing the transitional period and agreed on several points that could be a programme for the next phase of the transition.
“We agreed to preserve the unity, stability and security of the country which is a red line. Also, we agreed on the unity of the revolution’s forces until the tasks of the transitional period are completed and to work in coordination and harmony to address the challenges facing Sudan,” Bolad said.
The meeting with al-Burhan took place after a meeting with his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti” who leads the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Hemetti renewed his commitment to protect the revolution and reach “true democracy through free and fair elections”.
The meetings with the leaders of the military component come as the country suffers a difficult economic situation, slow implementation of the peace agreement and frictions between political forces.
Also, several reports emerged about growing divergences between the army and the RSF militia over the formation of a united army and Hemetti’s role in the peace process with the SPLM-N al-Hilu.
In his statements, al-Burhan said they agreed on “purposeful principles” to implement the transitional period and preserve the unity of the forces of the revolution to overcome the challenges facing the country.
“We met for the sake of the homeland and agreed to work for the sake of the homeland,” he said.
The military and civilian forces will work together to preserve the unity of the revolution’s forces, stressed the head of the Sovereign Council.
For his part, Burma emphasized the need for national unity to deal with the current situation.
In 2019, the FFC forces agreed to form a four-year transitional government to implement the slogans of the revolution (Freedom, Peace and Justice) and to prepare a permanent constitution before holding general elections.
They rejected quick elections before achieving peace, political and economic reforms, pointing to the failure of the post-revolution elected governments in 1965 and 1986 to end the civil war and to address the economic situation.
