MAWLAWI TO CIVIL DEFENSE VOLUNTEERS: YOU WILL GET YOUR RIGHTS VERY SOON

Caretaker Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Judge Bassam Mawlawi, on Wednesday renewed during his meeting with a delegation of civil defense volunteers his affirmation of completing the process of granting them full-time. Mawlawi praised the civil defense volunteers’ ‘many sacrifices throughout the years without anything in return.’ “God willing, you will get your rights very soon,’ pledged Mawlawi.

Big drop in oil prices

– Oil prices fell by more than $5 a barrel at the close of trading today, Wednesday, to their lowest levels in more than a year.

Brent crude fell $3.76, 4.9%, and settled at $73.69 a barrel.

US West Texas Intermediate crude also fell $3.72, 5.2%, to $67.61 at settlement.

The two benchmarks lost more than 4% yesterday, Tuesday, and recorded their lowest levels in 3 months, under pressure from fears that the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and another US bank would lead to a financial crisis that would affect fuel demand./ End

JUDGE ABU SAMRA SETS NEW DATE FOR CENTRAL BANK CHIEF SALAMEH’S HEARING SESSION TOMORROW MORNING

Beirut First Investigating Judge Charbel Bou Samra, has set a new date for Central Bank chief Riad Salameh’s hearing session at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow [Thursday], in implementation of the European judicial writ, our correspondent reported on Wednesday. Central Bank Governor Salameh did not appear before Judge Abu Samra and the European investigators for his interrogation which was scheduled for today at the Beirut Justice Palace.

TURKEY FLOODS KILL 10 IN EARTHQUAKE-AFFECTED PROVINCES

Floods caused by torrential rains hit two provinces that were devastated by last month’s earthquake, killing at least 10 people and increasing the misery for thousands who were left homeless, officials and media reports said Wednesday. At least five other people were reported missing. One person was killed in the town of Tut in southeastern Adiyaman province, where surging waters swept away a container home sheltering a family of earthquake survivors, Gov. Numan Hatipoglu said. The governor of neighboring Sanliurfa province, Salih Ayhan told HaberTurk television that four people were killed by the floods in his region. Later, rescuers found the bodies of five Syrian nationals inside a flooded basement apartment in Sanliurfa, the private DHA news agency reported.

BOU HABIB INAUGURATES ‘LEBANESE EXPATRIATE – REALITY AND CHALLENGES” CONFERENCE MARKING ‘INTERNATIONAL DAY OF LEBANESE EXPATRIATE’

Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Abdallah Bou Habib, on Wednesday highlighted the need to ‘think about developing policies that simulate the specificity of the Lebanese diaspora geographically, and perhaps sectorally and professionally, in an attempt to benefit from them by means of meeting their aspirations.’ Bou Habib further called for a workshop between the Beirut Bar Association and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants to develop a roadmap in favor of Lebanese emigrants. The Foreign Minister then welcomed the Beirut Bar Association’s contribution, in cooperation with the House of Parliament, to any future workshop to update expatriate laws. Minister Bou Habib’s words came during his inauguration of a conference titled ‘The Lebanese Expatriate – Reality and Challenges” marking the “International Day of the Lebanese Expatriate”, at the invitation of Nader KasBar, President of the Beirut Bar Association, and the Lebanese Expatriate Rights Protection Committee, at the Beirut Bar Association.
