Expert optimistic about China’s open-source capability, 28nm chip mass production

BEIJING, June 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on Expert optimistic about China’s open-source capability, 28nm chip mass production.

China should devote more efforts to strengthening its open-source capability as it continues to expand its hardware industry, a top expert in computer science said on May 27.

Ni Guangnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, underscored the importance of staying at the forefront of the open-source competition at a keynote speech in Shenzhen, southern China’s Guangdong province, according to a report by cs.com.cn, a website run by the China Securities Journal.

Ni said the open-source software is more widely used in artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and other leading technologies and is gradually replacing traditional proprietary software. In recent years, the open-source designing, building, and customizing of hardware has also grown in popularity.

China is an open-source global leader in terms of the number of people working and contributing to the field, Ni noted. By 2019, there were 10.50 million open-source contributors worldwide, among which 3.8 million came from Asia, including 1.18 million Chinese contributors, accounting for 31% of Asia’s total.

Despite its large scale, China should also devote more efforts to strengthen its open-source capability, he said.

Those who stay at the forefront of open-source development are bound to become leaders in the next-generation IT development, Ni added.

In an interview earlier this month with weiot.net, a media outlet focused on the IoT industry, Ni also stressed the importance of staying at the forefront of the advanced chipmaking industry to catch up with other leading countries.

Ni said new technology breakthroughs in the 28 nanometer (nm) node and the more advanced 14nm process will raise morale in China’s semiconductor industry, and facilitate growth in cutting-edge sectors like new energy vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Considering cost and technical factors, the 28nm chip is regarded as the demarcation point between mature and advanced processes.

Ni said, once China’s 28nm chips are fully localized, many downstream application industries will be able to achieve self-sufficiency and use domestic chips. This will also meet the needs of most electronic products other than mobile phones.

He said looking at the current domestic chip industry, leading companies are devoted to research and development in each and every section, completely covering the entire industrial chain. As the technology rapidly develops, the domestic chip industry is now fully equipped to begin mass producing 28nm process chips.

Viasat Ramps Satellite Services in the Middle East and Western Europe Ahead of ViaSat-3 Launch; Signs Ka-Band Capacity Lease Deal with Avanti Communications

CARLSBAD, Calif., and LONDON, June 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global communications company, today announced it signed a Ka-band capacity lease agreement with Avanti Communications Group plc (Avanti) to provide additional coverage and capacity across the Middle East and Western Europe—ahead of its ViaSat-3 global constellation—to support Viasat’s expanding global mobility and enterprise businesses, specifically across aviation, maritime and energy.

Viasat and Avanti have a long-standing relationship, having signed prior Ka-band capacity lease agreements. This new agreement augments Viasat’s KA-SAT satellite coverage and capacity and will initially be leveraged to serve new mobility customers in the region.

Dual National Pakistani Students Have ‘Brighter’ Chances of Securing Visas

LONDON, June 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — There are hundreds and thousands of Pakistani students who travel abroad each year to attain higher education. According to a Lahore-based education consultancy, those with dual citizenship have “brighter chances” to be granted study visas abroad. Currently, Pakistani citizens can travel to a small handful of destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, resulting in extensive paperwork and time and money costs when applying for study permits in North America or Europe.

In 2016, a British ranking agency recorded Pakistan as the weakest higher education system out of 50 examined nations while the US and UK topped the list. Pakistani students are increasingly interested in pursuing higher education from abroad because of the better quality education, career growth, and future opportunities available in different countries said Dr Syed Shujaat Ali Shah from FES Higher Education Consultants. For Pakistani students, the most favoured destinations to continue a higher education include the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and Ireland.

Micha Emmett, the CEO of a London-based second citizenship firm CS Global Partners, says that many Pakistani applicants look to citizenship by investment (CBI) programmes to ensure their child can access the world’s most esteemed schools. “Parents want to give their children the tools to succeed in learning and life, and attaining second citizenship through investment is the fastest and easiest route to make that happen,” she said.

Second citizenship from St Kitts and Nevis increases the mobility of Pakistani students and parents needing to travel to international education hubs, she said. “With citizenship of a European or Commonwealth nation like the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, you can enrol in some of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, perhaps to complete the Masters’ degree you’ve always wanted to pursue.”

With CBI, new citizens can also take advantage of St Kitts and Nevis’ many internationally-recognised universities like the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS), which confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Since March 2011, students at UMHS have participated in residency matches every year by being placed into various specialities across the US and Canada. The institution is recognised by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine, an international body listed by the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation, part of the US Department of Education.

Through CBI programmes, vetted applicants can legally acquire a second nationality in return for an investment in the host country. St Kitts and Nevis is known as the ‘Platinum Standard’ in the industry for its longest-standing offering globally. It acknowledges the growing importance to investors to obtain citizenship for their families too, which is why, for a limited time, families of up to four can get citizenship for US$150,000 instead of US$195,000 through the fund option. Moreover, St Kitts and Nevis allows future generations of successful applicants to inherit citizenship as well.

Recognized in 2020, Somalia’s Cycling Federation Faces Challenges

Bicycling enthusiasts around the globe are celebrating World Bicycle Day Thursday, including in Somalia, a Horn of Africa nation still struggling for stability after years of conflict. Somalia’s cycling federation was just recognized last year and with poor roads and equipment, it’s an uphill battle to prepare for upcoming international competition.

The Somali cycling federation has just 20 professional bicycles accepted in the International Cyclist’s Union (UCI), the world governing body for sports cycling based in Switzerland that oversees competition.

Poor equipment and closed roads due to security threats from the armed militant group Al-Shabab, mainly in the capital, Mogadishu, are a couple of challenges facing young cyclists training for international competition.

The secretary-general of the Somali cycling federation, Saed Ahmed Abukar, said despite the challenges, they are committed to building the sport at a grassroots level.

He said most roads used by cyclist for training in Mogadishu are either dilapidated or closed for security purposes, and therefore it has become a great challenge to achieve a smooth training schedule.

He added they also lack enough equipment, such as helmets, to protect the riders from injuries during accidents, and instead cyclist use football gear as an option.

In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 International World Bicycle Day.

One of the up-and-coming Somali cyclists, Hassan Bare Ugas, emerged in the second position during Somalia’s cross-country cycling championships held last year.

Bare, who practices in the gym most of his time to avoid poor lanes, said he dreams of flying the flag of his country in upcoming regional and international cycling competition.

He said he is practicing very hard in the gym and sometimes on city streets, wishing to represent his nation in upcoming international competition, such as the African championships and the Olympic Games.

According to the United Nations, apart from its sporting activities, the use of bicycles makes education, health care and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations in Africa and contribute to cleaner air and less congestion on roads.
