April 11, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The military-led Sovereign Council on Monday was briefed on the aspects of support that Sudan demands from the UNITAMS, following harsh criticism for its action and threats by Gen al-Burhan to expel its chief.
The Sudanese authorities slammed a report the UNITAMS head made to the Security Council last March. The government said it focused on the political situation and neglected to provide support to peace implementation, protection of displaced civilians and mobilisation of economic and humanitarian assistance.
Also, the foreign ministry on March 29 stated they tasked the committee that responded to the report made by Volker Perthes with preparing a series of measures to reorient UNITAMS activities.
Speaking to reporters after a regular weekly meeting on Monday, Sovereign Council Member and Spokeswoman Salma Abdel Jabar said they were briefed on the matrix of the Sudanese Government’s needs from the United Nations Mission (UNTAMS).
“The most important of these needs are the enforcement of the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan, and support for the implementation of its protocols,” said Abdel Jabar.
Also, they include mobilization of resources, providing logistical support for capacity-building, support for national human rights mechanisms and assistance in establishing and supporting the Commission for Disarmament and Reintegration, supporting the transitional justice, reconstruction and development mechanisms.
The Security Council, on June 4, 2020, decided to establish a political mission in Sudan to assist the transition towards democratic governance, provide support for the peace process and bolster efforts to maintain the rule of law and security institutions.
In a separate statement, the Sovereign Council said al-Burhan met with the newly appointed Sudan’s ambassadors to the United Nations and Zambia and COMESA.
The statement said the head of the Sovereign Council reiterated Sudan’s support for the United Nations Charter and pointed to the need to restore international support to the ongoing efforts to build peace and stability in the country.
Ambassador Al-Harith Idris al-Harith, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said the chairman of the Sovereign Council directed him to adopt Sudan’s higher national interests, support the UN Charter, call for peace and restore interest in the peace process in Sudan.
