Kiir sacks humanitarian affairs minister, Warrap governor

President Salva Kiir has fired his Humanitarian Affairs Minister, Peter Mayen Majongdit, amid rising hunger across the flood and conflict-affected areas.

Majongdit, who was appointed in March 2020 when the transitional cabinet was formed, was fired through a presidential decree Wednesday evening aired on state broadcaster South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC).

No reasons were given for the sacking.

Majongdit is a leading member of the Other Political Parties (OPP), a party to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement signed in Ethiopia to end more than six years of conflict.

The South Sudanese leader also removed Warrap State Governor Aleu Ayieny Aleu, replacing him with Manheim Bol Malek, who once served as deputy governor for the defunct Tonj state.

Aleu was appointed to the position in January 2021. No reason was given for his sacking.
