Jordan to host regional meeting on violence against refugees

Jordan on Monday and Tuesday is set to host the regional meeting on the implementation of the Arab Strategy for the Prevention of and Response to All Forms of Violence in Asylum Context. The meeting is organized by the Ministry of Social Development, in partnership and cooperation with the Arab League and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Arab League’s Assistant Secretary General and Head of Social Affairs Sector, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Minister of State for Women’s Affairs in Libya, in addition to high-level representatives from the concerned authorities of the Arab League member states, UN specialized agencies and stakeholders on women and girls. Prepared by the Arab League’s General Secretariat (Social Affairs Sector – Women’s Department) in cooperation with the UNHCR and was approved by the Arab League’s Council at the ministerial level at its 155th session in 2021, the strategy seeks to provide an Arab guiding framework that supports member states’ efforts to protect refugees from violence, especially women and girls. This framework includes the adoption, review and implementation of legislation and policies in line with national legislation and international covenants. The meeting aims to identify regional priorities in the prevention of and response to all forms of violence in asylum context in the Arab region, within the framework of the action plan attached to the Arab strategy, in consultation between the concerned authorities in member states and other actors working in this field. The meeting will also review national efforts and current national strategies on addressing violence and focus on refugee women and girls from different backgrounds by highlighting effective case management, safe and confidential referral to specialized sectoral services, availability of high quality services and quality assurance of mental health and psychosocial support.
