Al-Balqa Applied University launches landmark solar energy project for electricity generation

Al-Balqa Applied University on Tuesday unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, marking a significant leap forward in Jordan’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Ahmad Al-Ajlouni, President of the university, announced the commencement of operations for Jordan’s largest solar energy electricity generation project. The initiative is set to revolutionize the energy landscape of Jordanian universities, as it taps into the vast potential of solar power.

The innovative project, housed at the Princess Tasneem Bint Ghazi Station for Technological Research, situated within the university’s premises in Hamra Al-Shehn, stands as a testament to the institution’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy sources.

The official decision to initiate the system’s operation was granted by the National Electric Power Company. As of Tuesday, the solar energy facility has commenced its mission of transforming sunlight into clean, reliable electricity. With an impressive production capacity of 7 megawatts, the system is projected to generate approximately 15 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, thereby significantly contributing to the university’s energy needs.

“Beyond its role in reducing the university’s carbon footprint and energy costs, this venture serves as an invaluable practical and educational resource,” Ajlouni noted, highlighting that the project is poised to become an immersive laboratory for students specializing in engineering, electrical engineering, and renewable energy disciplines, as it will provide hands-on opportunities for learning and experimentation.

Additionally, the project will function as a hub for scientific research and innovation, as faculty members and postgraduate students in relevant fields will have access to this state-of-the-art facility, enabling them to conduct advanced studies, experimental trials, and pioneering research initiatives.

The project’s comprehensive approach encompasses academic exploration, technological advancement, and societal impact, propelling Jordan’s academic and environmental landscapes forward.
