Kenya to help South Sudan move goods from Mombasa with ease

JUBA— Kenya will facilitate the cost-effective movement of goods from the port of Mombasa to South Sudan.

President William Ruto said South Sudan traders can choose to clear their goods from the port of Mombasa, Nairobi or Naivasha. The President was speaking in Juba after a bilateral meeting with President Salva Kiir at his office on Saturday.

Dr Ruto said Kenya was keen to make it easier for goods to reach South Sudan. “Traders from South Sudan can choose the most convenient point to pick their goods with no restrictions,” said Dr Ruto.

President Ruto further said Kenya will provide land to South Sudan in Mombasa to build a dry port to ease the cost of doing business between citizens of the two nations.

President Kiir thanked Dr Ruto for removing restrictions that made it difficult for traders from South Sudan to clear their goods.

“On behalf of the people of South Sudan we are grateful to Kenya for allowing our traders to choose where to clear their goods without any restrictions,” said President Kiir.

President Ruto was on a one-day official visit to South Sudan. He was accompanied by Roads and infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen among others. South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar was present at the press briefing.

Political framework agreement will be signed on Monday, confirm FFC

The Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) denied reports that the signing of a framework agreement had been suspended to give room for talks with the armed groups that rejected it.

Abdel Aziz Asher, a leading member of the Justice and Equality Movement said that they agreed with an FFC delegation to postpone in principle the signing of the framework agreement” according to a post on Facebook by an Egyptian journalist.

“The forces for Freedom and Change confirm that the signing of the Political Framework Agreement will take place on the predetermined date, tomorrow, Monday, December 5, 2022,” read the statement.

“News reports about its postponement are inaccurate and baseless,” further stressed the FFC.

The coalition added that the postponement was not discussed with the Democratic Bloc, pointing out that the general principles and terms of the political framework agreement are clear regarding the objectives of the revolution and the achievement of democratic transition.

Several misleading fake news and rumours about the political process recently circulated on social media.

“The purpose (of these false reports) is to disturb the political arena and confuse public opinion,” concluded the FFC.

The political coalition and the military component on Friday issued statements announcing that the signing ceremony will take place on Monday.
