LG SUPPORTS YOUNG TECHNOLOGY LEADERS THROUGH 2022 GLOBAL IT CHALLENGE

Attracting More than 320 Participants From Around the World, GITC Continues to Empower Youth with Disabilities for Eleventh Year

SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics recently hosted the final round of the 11th Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities (GITC). The two-day event saw inspiring, young participants from all over the world test their skills for computer-based activities in a series of timed challenges. Adopting a hybrid online and offline format, several key participating countries including Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam set up venues locally as well.

Following the success of the GITC’s preliminary round in August, registrations were high for the competition’s last stage. Ultimately, more than 320 participants from 16 countries were invited to join in the final round which was held online. After competing in four challenges – eTool, eLifeMap, eContent and eCreative – the young contestants gathered both in-person and online for an awards ceremony that acknowledged this year’s winners while also allowing everyone to come together and share experiences.

The eTool challenge tests entrants’ ability to make and edit presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint and utilize functions and formulae to calculate and organize data in Microsoft Excel. eLifeMap involves conducting advanced text and image searches online to solve daily problems, while eContent evaluates one’s capacity to create and edit videos dealing with a specific topic. Lastly, the eCreative challenge, which is divided into two sections, tasks participants with coding a self-driving car program (eCreative_SmartCar) and with developing an idea for a technology to make life more convenient for persons with disabilities (eCreative_IoT).

LG Corporation, in conjunction with South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, has been leading the GITC since 2011. The program was established to help youth with disabilities by bridging the digital gap, enhancing their ability to utilize IT to improve their employment and higher education opportunities. Run by LG Electronics and the GITC Organizing Committee, and now in its eleventh year, the competition has attracted a total of around 4,000 young participants to date.

Using the GITC as a stepping stone for academic and professional pursuits, participants have continued to challenge themselves to accomplish their dreams after the competition. Faiza Pulri Adila from Indonesia, who won the all-around championship in the 2018 GITC, is studying nanotechnology engineering at Airlangga University in Indonesia. In addition, Cheenmanee Tnanapon from Thailand, the first person with developmental disabilities to win the all-round championship in the 2016 GITC, is taking the lead in raising disability awareness by appearing on popular Thai TV programs.

“I’ve worked very hard for many days with my friends for the competition because I thought this opportunity was perfect for me to keep pushing myself to improve my skills,” said Varinporn Thongjamnong, a 19 year-old from Thailand and winner of all-around championship in the 2022 Global IT Challenge. “I’m honored to be this year’s Global IT Winner, which I’m confident will motivate me to study even harder to achieve my dreams.”

Status of Sudan junta agreement unclear after conflicting reports

El Wasig El Bereir, Secretary-General of the National Umma Party (NUP) and spokesperson for the Forces for Freedom and Change-Central Council (FFC-CC) said that the signing of the framework agreement with the military will be no later than Monday. However, Adel Khalafallah, the spokesperson for the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, says that the signing of the framework agreement, originally set for December 3, has been postponed for an indefinite period.

El Wasig El Bereir told Radio Dabanga that the signing has been delayed because of continuing efforts to persuade rebel leaders Minni Minawi, now Governor of the Darfur region, and Jibril Ibrahim, currently Sudan’s Minister of Finance, to sign the framework agreement. “The majority of the political and professional forces of the revolution is ready to sign.”

In order to expedite the agreement in order to form a new civilian government as soon as possible, the negotiators, the AU-IGAD-UN Trilateral Mechanism, proposed to postpone talks on four important and contentious issues; justice and transitional justice, security and military reform, empowerment removal*, and the Juba Peace Agreement have been postponed for the final agreement.

El Bereir said that it is expected that the signing of a final agreement with the junta will take place within three to four weeks, after which the new power structures will be formed.

However, Adel Khalafallah, the spokesperson for the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, says that the signing of the framework agreement, originally set for December 3, has been postponed for an indefinite period.

He told Radio Dabanga that the FFC-CC has now formed four committees to study the comments on the draft constitutional document developed by the Sudanese Bar Association, the political declaration of intent signed by the military and the civilian opposition, and the framework agreement.

He accused the military of seeking to divide the FFC-CC. “With their comments that have been added to the transitional constitution draft and the framework agreement they intend “to buy time and cause more cracks in the body of the forces of the revolution”.

Khalafallah pointed to “a disturbance in the priorities of some members of the FFC”** and “the widening circle of those rejecting the settlement”. He said that “the balance of power is not in the interest of any political process that could end the military coup and liquidate its effects”. Referring the widening circle of reactions rejecting the settlement.

He affirmed his party’s adherence to its position that a settlement with the military cannot be reached if it does not achieve “the goals of the revolution and the aspirations of the Sudanese people”.

Lawyer Sati El Haj, chair of the Nasserist Social Justice Movement, said that the party categorically rejects the military’s input to the documents of the transitional arrangements.

“The talks should be limited to the civilian forces, including the armed struggle movements,” he told Radio Dabanga. The military must be excluded from the negotiations.

“In addition, any agreement that does not take into account the resistance committees and their political charters will not succeed in crossing the transitional period,” he said and called for “strengthening the resistance committees, rooting them, and relying on them to accomplish the tasks of the transitional period”.

Sudanese Anti-Corruption Figure Freed on Eve of Political Deal

A prominent Sudanese politician was released from jail on Sunday, a day before the civilian coalition he belonged to was due to sign an initial deal with the military to end a political standoff triggered in October 2021 by a coup.

The framework deal would, according to a copy seen by Reuters, involve a two-year, civilian-led political transition in which the military’s role would be limited to a security and defense council headed by a prime minister.

But it sets no time for a final deal and leaves sensitive issues, including transitional justice and security sector reform, for further talks. It has already faced opposition from anti-military protest groups and Islamist factions loyal to the regime of Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in 2019.

Leftist politician Wagdi Salih, who was freed at a police station in the capital Khartoum, was at the forefront of an anti-corruption committee tasked with dismantling Bashir’s regime.

Sudan has been without a prime minister since last year’s coup, which halted a power-sharing arrangement between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition that was meant to lead to democratic elections. The FFC had called Salih’s arrest in October “purely political.”

After more than a year of mass protests against the coup and with Sudan’s long crisis-ridden economy now stagnating after billions of dollars in international financial assistance was suspended, the military has recently adopted a more conciliatory stance towards pro-democracy groups.

It has, meanwhile, toughened its tone against Islamist supporters of Bashir’s regime.

The military and the FFC said this week that they intended to sign the framework agreement on Monday, and the deputy leader of the current ruling council on Sunday met some powerful former rebel factions that have questioned the deal, urging them to back it.

Talks have been facilitated by the United Nations, the United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, among others.
