KHARTOUM, President Omer Al-Bashir of Sudan says Sudan and Ethiopia share identical views in all the issues of mutual concern which he discussed with visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed here Thursday.
At a joint media conference at the Republican Palace with Abiy, President Al-Bashir said Sudan and Ethiopia had agreed to re-activate the Joint Higher Co-operation Committee which had been set up and would review and implement all the agreed upon nmatters.
He added that a decree releasing all Ethiopian convicts now held in jails in Sudan was issued in honour of the visit of the Ethiopian Prime Minister.
President Al-Bashir indicated that the talks between the two sides had included ways of boosting bilateral trade relations, easing the movement of citizens across their common border, protection of Ethiopian commodities shipped through Sudanese ports, establishment of free zones in a number of locations, bolstering the exchange of benefits and enhancing peace at the joint border area.
He pointed out that Sudan and Ethiopia shared identical views on the issues of Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam, affirming the serious commitment that the water shares for Egypt shall not be affected. He said Sudan had found through studies that the positive effect of the dam far outweighed its negative impacts.
President Al-Bashir affirmed the safety of the Renaissance Dam was fully assured and that it would not pose any risk to Sudan and Egypt, adding that the filling of the dam’s lake will not affect the irrigation facilities in both Sudan and Egypt.
He said Sudan and Ethiopia had agreed on the co-ordination and co-operation between them on the issues of peace at the region and in South Sudan State through the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the eight-nation Horn of Africa grouping of which Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan all all members.
