UNISFA condemns renewed attacks in Abyei region

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) said it is “deeply” disturbed by the renewed clashes between the Twic and Ngok Dinka communities taking place in Agok, an area 28 kilometres from Abyei town.

Reports said clashes between the two groups on September 23, 2022 has resulted in to an influx of over 223 people seeking protection in Agok area.

Although access still remains a challenge, UNISFA as well as humanitarian partners, with coordination from the UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) are providing relief to people.

UNISFA further said it has increased aerial patrols while closely monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, UNISFA’s Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr has strongly condemned the most recent attack, saying it can only contribute to more tension and chances of renewed violence in the area.

Sawyerr urged the Abyei Chief Administrator and the Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief to engage with their counterparts in Warrap State as well as South Sudan government officials to step up efforts to diffuse the tension and find a political solution to the clashes.

He also appealed to the youths from both sides to refrain from use of violence to voice their opinions and embrace UNISFA’s peace initiative to ease the tension in the area.

UNISFA said it is fully committed to pursuing its mandate to ensure that Abyei is free of arms and armed groups, and completely deplores acts that will further escalate tensions.
