UAE Permanent Representative views UN programmes on Disaster Risk Reduction

WAM GENEVA, 20th February, 2014 (WAM) — Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, has been briefed by Margareta Wahlstrom, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, on future programmes on both International and Arab levels.

Mr. Al Zaabi was also briefed on the preparations on board for hosting the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in June in Sendai, Japan.

During the meeting, which took place at Al Zaabi’s office, the U.N. official also reviewed the preparatory regional conferences especially including the Middle East Region, noting that the next preparatory meeting will be held in June, in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

The U.N. official also hailed the effective played by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, NCEMA, works under the umbrella and supervision of the Higher National Security Council.

She also expressed her interest in continuing the cooperation with the relevant authorities in the United Arab Emirates to boost international cooperation in the field of risk reduction.

For his part, Al Zaabi expressed his appreciation to the work of the Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy’s Secretariat. He also highlighted the readiness and keenness of U.A.E.’s permanent mission in Geneva to closely cooperate with the Secretariat to facilitate its work.
