ISTANBUL: The UAE Men’s and Women’s team won their matches in the seventh round of the World Chess Olympiad held at Istanbul Expo Centre, Istanbul, Turkey.
UAE Men’s team defeated Aruba 3.5-0.5. On the top board IM Noaman Omar of UAE won against CM Croes Octavio. In a Bogo-Indian defence, Omar displayed powerful onslaught and manoeuvred his pieces well. In rook and pawn endgame, Omar had an extra and managed to bring his rooks to the seventh rank. Octavio resigned on the 56th move as he had further loss of material.
UAE CM Abdullah Faisal and FM Ibrahim Mohamed Khouri defeated Juan Pablo De Mey and Jacopucci Enrique on the third and fourth board respectively.
Russia and China won their matches 2.5-1.5 against Azerbaijan and Armenia on the first and second table. Russian GM Alexander Grischuk defeated GM Safari Eltaj on the second board. Grischuk had an extra pawn and converted his advantage into victory. Other board games ended in draws.
China celebrated an important victory by GM Yue Wang that leaves them on the shared 2nd place, right behind Russia. On the second board, Wang defeated GM Sergei Movsesian in a complicated battle. Other board games ended in draws.
The defending champions from Ukraine have made a huge leap ahead by defeating Spain. Vassily Ivanchuk’s win on the first board was the only decided game in the match. Ukraine will play Russia in the next round.
The Philippines bravely resisted the 4th-seed Hungary to a 2-2 tie. Wesley So of Philippines and Peter Leko played a wild line of the Marshall Attack, but the game ended in a draw.
Germany edged Moldova 2,5-1,5 and England outplayed Georgia in the same manner. USA won against the young Turkish team by 3.5-0.5. Argentina and India, as well as Israel and France, traded a couple of defeats for each team to split the points in their respective matches.
In the Women’s section, China defeated Georgia 2.5-1.5 while Russia and Ukraine drew their match against Poland and France 2-2. On the lower boards, Chinese WGM Qian Huang and Yixin Ding won their games to clinch victory for China.
UAE Women’s team defeated Uganda 3-1. WIM Noura Mohamed, WFM Nuaman Amna Al-Ali and WFM Fayeqa Bukhashem registered facile victories against Grace Kigeni, Goretti Angolikin, Rita Nsubuga respectively.
