The world is celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Alchemist, one of the most powerful spiritual books ever written – a must read for all people, especially the young, by the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho.
The book is a short story of the journey of a young shepherd, Santiago, across the Arabian desert to find his personal treasure.
Written in simple, poetic prose and infused with aromatic, inspiring ideas, The Alchemist makes you want to reach for the stars, as it demonstrates that you, and I, matter. We all do! If you have ever had a dream but could not pursue it because you felt unworthy, read the book. It will remind you of the power within you to speak the Language of the World. The book resonates with humanity for it is the story of all of us – we are all Santiago in search of our Personal Legend. Alas, some discover it, some don’t. Some honour it, some don’t. Some fulfill it, some don’t.
If you read The Alchemist, it will give you the courage to find, honour and fulfill your Personal Legend. Here are some of the most powerful, lyrical lessons from The Alchemist:
-It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.
-Dare to dream. Dare greatly.
-People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.
-To realise one’s Personal Legend is a person’s only real obligation.
-When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. uIf you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man.
-It’s only those who are persistent, and willing to study things deeply, who achieve the master work.
-Everything in life is an omen.
-There is a language in the world that everyone understands. It is the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of a search for something believed in and desired.
-All things are one.
-No matter what he does, every person on Earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally, he does not know it.
-Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there.
-Wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.
-You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it is better to listen to what it has to say. That way, you’ll never have to fear an unanticipated blow.
-There are certain things one shouldn’t ask about, so as not to flee from one’s own Personal Legend.
-People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.
-There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: The fear of failure.
-Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place.
-The fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.
-When you are loved, you can do anything in creation.
-The world has a soul, and that whoever understands that soul can also understand the language of things.
-Every search begins with beginner’s luck. And every search ends with the victor’s being severely tested. Before a dream is realised, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realising our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we have moved toward that dream. That’s the point at which most people give up.
-When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.
-The boy reached through to the Soul of the World, and saw that it was part of the soul of God. And he saw that the Soul of God was his own soul. And that he, a boy, could perform miracles.
Life is generous to those who pursue their Personal Legend. The Alchemist “invites us to live out our dreams, to embrace the uncertainty of life and to rise to meet our own unique destiny” and to learn the Language of the World: love and connection. You master that language, you enter the field of pure potentiality and become an Alchemist, turning lead into gold.
