Sultan Bin Khalifa: UAE’s humanitarian policy stems from the faith in its value

WAM Dubai, Dec 08th, 2012 (WAM) – HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Advisor to HH the President said that the UAE has a long history in the charitable and humanitarian work at the local, regional and international levels as the country progressed on the foundations laid by late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his footsteps were followed by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“UAE did not adopt the policy of humanitarian help for ostentation or for record in aid monitors, but because it believed in the value and importance of humanitarian work, especially as it is the heart of our religion which urged us to do good without waiting for mundane rewards. God Almighty gave us the good and this good is distributed to the needy and those who are exposed to crises, wars and catastrophes”, HH said.

He added: ” When UAE extends its hands of help, it puts the human being the first and the last, regardless of any other considerations and this is proven anywhere the UAE’s aid has reached”.

Sheikh Sultan was giving a statement on the occasion of his winning of the Hamdan Award for Distinct Personality of the Year in the medical field.

HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan is a winner of Hamdan Award for Honoring Individuals Working in the Field of Medicine and Health in recognition of his effective role in the humanitarian works and in supporting Scientific Research.

About choosing Thalassemia to be one of the pivots of his humanitarian and charity works in the service of science and scientists Dr. Sheikh Sultan said: “Thalassemia and other Hemoglobinopathies are the most common genetic diseases in the world and this applies to the UAE also. The treatment of this disease drains huge funds of many governments, and we decided to support our community through the provision of better treatments for Thalassemia by establishing the best centers across the country to facilitate the access of patients. This was the purpose of the establishment of Thalassemia Centre in Fujairah to serve the emirate and the neighboring regions”.

The Sultan Bin Khalifa International Thalassemia Award was established to honor individuals and institutions that have contributed to an active role in the treatment of disease and put the most important programs to reduce the spread of the disease and reduce the number of births of children infected by the disease. The Award was established to encourage scientific and medical research in the field of thalassemia and other blood diseases, he noted.

Dr. Sheikh Sultan has been deeply committed for the welfare of Thalassemia Community since a long time, having initiated several magnanimous projects for the benefit of Thalassemia Patients and their families.
