KHARTOUM, President Omer al-Bashir of Sudan has issued a Republican Decree setting free all political detainees in the country in response to appeals by political parties and forces involved in the country’s National Dialogue for political reconciliation.
Tuesday’s decree stated that the release of political detainees was aimed at boosting the spirit of national accord and peace, which had been brought about by the National Dialogue as well as political and societal forces, to create and appropriate climate for national endeavours.
It would also open the doors for participation of all political forces in deliberations over national issues and requirements for the future as well as over steps for drafting the country’s permanent Constitution.
The decree pointed out that the President of the Republic had earlier referred to these issues in his statement to the National Legislature early this month.
Meanwhile, State Minister and Director of President’s Office Hatem Hassan Bakheet said the relevant authorities would carry out the decision of the President on the release of the political detainees immediately.
