KHARTOUM– Sudan is enacting deterrent legislation aimed at protecting the country’s forests and combating their destruction, says the Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Development, Dr. Hassan Abdul- Gadir Hilal.
The government is also working hard to restore its forests and tree cover, and boost the planting of forests, he said in a statement to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) here over the weekend.
Dr. Hilal added that the Environment Ministry was working on achieveing a target of green space in the country to reach 25 to 30 per cent of the country’s spaces, through preventing the deterioration and promoting the growth of forests, tree cover, and green belts.
The minister stressed importance of these projects in the fight to stop desertification, destruction of rivers’ banks, and many other environmental issues which affect Sudan’s food security.
