ABU DHABI: Cooperation between women unions in the UAE and Sri Lanka and women’s issues were discussed today by H.H Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Sri Lankan President’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
Efforts by the UAE to promote development and welfare of women, mothers and children as well as its interest in technological and knowledge exchange programs to advance women’s education and increase their opportunities to serve the community were also discussed at the meeting by Sheikha Fatima and the Sri Lankan First Lady.
“Emirati women play a vital role in the national economic, social and cultural transformation,” Sheikha Fatima said in remarks at the meeting.
For her part, Mrs. Rajapaksa hailed Sheikha Fatima’s role to promote the development of Emirati women and her initiatives to elevate the welfare of mothers and children as well as education and combat illiteracy.
Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, wife of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, Sheikha Maryam Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikha Ayesha Bint Suhail Bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, Mariam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of Social Affairs and Dr. Maytha Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State attended the meeting at Al Bahr Palace.
