MUSCAT: Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) staff have helped raise more than RO330,000 for victims of the recent hostilities in Gaza Strip.

This is the largest private sector donation in Oman for the cause, a press release said adding that over 2,600 staff contributed from their salaries to a corporate appeal to pay for humanitarian aid. The money raised will be used to pay for food, water, medicine, shelter, bedding, cooking utensils and school bags for children.

PDO has been working with Oman Charitable Organization (OCO), which is under governmental supervision, to ensure that all donations are used as effectively as possible.

Abdul Amir al Ajmi, PDO’s external affairs director said in the release, “Our staff wanted to do something to help relieve the suffering of the many who were affected by the hostilities and I’m proud of the generosity and compassion they have shown.

“PDO is also very grateful to OCO for the continuous work it does in supporting humanitarian causes. Knowing that all donations are going through this trusted authority has encouraged a magnificent response from our employees as they know their donations will be put to good use and reach the victims.”

Ali Ibrahim Shenoon al Raisi, OCO executive chairman said, “On behalf of the OCO board, we are very grateful for the generosity and compassion of each and every member of PDO staff who contributed, and we will ensure that the funds are used effectively to help those most in need in Gaza.

“PDO is the largest private donor in Oman to this appeal and has coordinated very well with us. We call on other companies and individuals to follow its example. The fighting is over but the crisis isn’t.”

OCO has already despatched urgent food, medical and bedding supplies to Gaza as part of a seven-stage programme of support. It has also sent 3,000 tents and is planning to deliver 1,000 caravans to cater for emergency accommodation needs.

The release said that PDO has a long history of raising funds and donating money for various humanitarian causes over the years.

Recent staff donations included support to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and to aid victims of the Syrian conflict.

The release also said that donations to the Gaza Appeal can be made at www.oco.org.net.om.
