MUSCAT: After being flooded with requests for more speed breakers on the city’s roads, Muscat governorate’s Municipal Council is planning to conduct a study on how beneficial the additions will be.
The Municipal Council’s research and studies wing has received over a hundred requests from members of the public for more speed breakers, an official said adding, “Many roads already have speed breakers and they can be beneficial in reducing accidents.”
Like in all cases, before the Municipal Council reaches any decision, its research wing and studies wing will conduct a feasibility study.
“We will have to study if Muscat will benefit or not, and which roads should have speed breakers and which ones should not.
“Unfortunately, existing speed breakers on several roads are not clearly visible due to faded paint. These roads will not be included in the study,” the official said.
A road sign always indicates a speed breaker ahead to draw a driver’s attention and prevent damage to the vehicle or its passengers, he said.
According to the official, too many speed breakers can be a disadvantage. “Some roads have regular traffic snarls and speed breakers will add to the congestion as they will further slow down vehicle movement. Certain emergency vehicles like ambulances could get delayed. We need to consider these aspects.”
The study will be conducted in collaboration with concerned ministries and organisations.
