MUSCAT: The Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on creating slots on education portals for the company to post awareness messages for teachers and students.
The MoU was signed by Manal bint Mohammed al Abdwani, chairman of MEDC’s board of directors and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan al Toobi, advisor in MoE.
The slots created under the MoU will also provide information on MEDC services and allow students using desktop and laptop computers and mobile devices calculate the monthly power consumption of their devices.
Eng Salman Ali al Hattali, senior manager – consumer affairs, MEDC said, “This is the first step where we can educate young minds by inculcating the culture of conservation.We can also spread awareness by making students attend workshops and seminars organised by MEDC.”
The MoU also covers exchange of information, expertise, research, educational material and promotion of educational television shows. It includes invitations to educational conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops related to electricity.
Sheikh Toobi said, “It is important to educate our students and teachers on the importance of electricity and rationalising its consumption.
“It is vital to deliver the education mission through missions that reflect the company’s social responsibility.
“Students should know from an early age how much power their laptops and mobile devices consume. They should also learn to calculate their electricity bill.”
Eng Hattali said, “We plan to distribute leaflets to students so that they develop the habit of conserving power. An inter-school power conservation conference will also be held where the winner will be judged on the monthly bill.”
