The world’s oldest living lab rat points the way to rejuvenation

[ad_1]

“Sima”, a 47 months-old female rat, is being treated with E5, a treatment intended to recreate the circulatory environment of a young mammal; the maximum recorded lifespan for this species is 45.5 months.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — An experiment led by Dr. Harold Katcher, one of the discoverers of the first breast cancer gene, is giving humanity hope of fulfilling the dream of undoing aging. While working at Yuvan Research Inc., he discovered which part of the blood of young animals controls the age of the organism, and tested it in eight Sprague Dawley female rats. “Sima” is the last survivor, but the age she has reached allows us to see a path for human rejuvenation. “Cellular aging is a cell non-autonomous process — it doesn’t depend on the cell’s history, but on its environment”, states Dr. Katcher, Chief Scientific Officer of Yuvan, a startup based in California working on rejuvenation treatments.

Sima in the lab — how long will she live?

This experiment is a follow-up to another experiment showing that Yuvan’s therapy caused a 54% rejuvenation in male rats according to an epigenetic clock analysis performed by then UCLA professor Dr. Steve Horvath. Afterward, a Belgian non-profit, HEALES, decided to fund two lifespan studies, one using Yuvan’s treatment, called “E5”, and another one, led by Dr. Rodolfo Goya, professor at La Plata University (Argentina), using young rat plasma. Dr. Goya’s experiment achieved moderate life extension. Yuvan’s experiment is still ongoing as Sima is alive at 47 months of age.

Also, Sima and the other treated rats showed a grip strength 2.8 times higher than the controls. According to Dr. Goya, “muscular strength indicates prolonged healthspan.” Sima is a Rattus norvegicus, a species with a maximum recorded lifespan of 45.5 months. Their average lifespan is 24-36 months. Yuvan’s treatment started when the rats were already 24 months old and even so pushed the maximum lifespan of the species with a treated group comprising only 8 rats.

The E5 production process is patent-pending, and the story of its discovery is captured in Dr. Katcher’s book The Illusion of Knowledge. Yuvan is planning trials in other species before testing it in humans — in human terms, Sima is already 126 years old, considering 122.5 years as the human maximum lifespan. “Sima” means “limit/boundary/frontier” in Sanskrit, and by surpassing the lifespan limit of its species, it reminds us that human history is a history of surpassing limits.

United Imaging has just been an incredible partner for us to work with, at every level, at the hardware level, at the installation level, at the software level, and the applications level. It’s been a remarkable journey,” said Dr. John Osborne, Director of Cardiovascular CT, Carrollton Regional Medical Center in Dallas, TX, before the Brand Launch Event at ArabHealth 2023.

United Imaging embraces and leads the trends of the global medical imaging industry and will continue to work on foundational technologies and advanced clinical applications and expand its exploration further into uncharted territories. UN Refugee Commissioner Wants Better Ethiopia Funding

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has appealed for more international aid to help Ethiopia’s war-displaced, saying only half of their required funding was met last year.

While visiting Ethiopia this week, the high commissioner said that addressing the needs of Ukrainian people affected by Russia’s invasion must not mean the needs of the rest of the world are neglected.

“Last year, UNCHR’s program in Ethiopia were only half funded,” Grandi said. “This is not acceptable and I hope that this year after the peace agreement, that there will be more attention and more support given to our programs.”

During his first visit to Ethiopia since the November peace deal was reached between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the high commissioner visited Mekelle, the capital of Tigray region, where he met with people displaced by the two-year war.

“I want to make a strong appeal here, where there is an opening created by the peace process, it is absolutely important that all necessary resources are mobilized to sustain the peace agreement,” he said.

The high commissioner also visited the new refugee site in Alemwach in the Amhara Region, which shelters 22,000 Eritreans.

“I think there’s quite a lot of work that we need to do on that particular site to make living conditions better. We had quite a good discussion with the representative of the refugees. We also have to recognize that Eritreans have gone through a very troubled time,” Grandi said.

Prior to the start of the war in Ethiopia, about 20,000 Eritrean refugees were sheltered in camps in Tigray. Both camps were destroyed when they came under attack during the war.

The high commissioner also raised the importance of supporting the U.N.’s work in Ethiopia in recognition of the country hosting the third largest number of refugees in the world, with 880,000 people. A majority of those refugees are South Sudanese, followed by Somalis and Eritreans.

FFC: Talks over lifting Sudan AU suspension ‘not good’

In the run-up to the 36th ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly from February 15 to 19, a delegation from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is holding talks in Addis Ababa over lifting the suspension of Sudan’s membership.

Chairman of the AU Commission Moussa Faki will visit Khartoum next week, almost four years after the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) decided to suspend the participation of Sudan in all AU activities until the effective establishment of a civilian-led government.

Ammar Hamouda, leading member of the Unionist Association and foreign relations spokesperson for the mainstream Forces for Freedom and Change, the FFC-Central Council, described the talks as “not good,” especially “in light of the faltering implementation of the current political process.”

Hamouda considers the steps “a pre-emptive attempt to reap the fruits of the Framework Agreement before it has matured. Two months have passed since the signing of the agreement and the parties have not yet reached the end of the political process.”

He explained that “there are issues that must be discussed before a civilian-led government is formed and the democratic path is restored. This will allow Sudan to restore its regional and international relationships.”

Lawyer El Moez Hazrat commented that the AU does not have the right to lift the suspension of Sudan’s membership except at the request of a civilian-led government. “The coup is still ongoing. The situation has not changed,” he said.

“If the AU or AUPSC agree to lift the suspension of Sudan’s membership now, they will be making a big mistake. It will only open the door to new military coups,” he explained.

According to journalist and political analyst Mohamed El Mabrouk, the AU wants to restore Sudan’s membership because of the Western agenda in Africa.

He told Radio Dabanga that the AU supports the restoration of civilian rule as laid out in the Framework Agreement.

“The AU threw carrots to the military in order to entice them to form a civilian government, especially since Sudan is currently chairing the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Eastern Africa, which makes them hasten to lift the freeze and return it to the AU system.”

In an initial reaction on April 15, 2019, the AUPSC denounced the coup d’état and gave the military junta 15 days to relinquish power to a civilian interim government, on pain of possible suspension of Sudan’s AU membership. A meeting of AU leaders in Cairo on April 23 recommended allowing the junta three months to relinquish power to civilian authority, however at a subsequent meeting in Tunis on May 1, the AUPSC decided on “a final extension of 60 days” to June 6, 2019.

Sudan’s suspension was briefly lifted in 2021, pending the installation of a civilian-led government. The country’s membership was revoked again one month later on October 25. The AU branded the “seizure of power” by the military “unconstitutional.”
