Global Recommendations for Colon Cancer Translated into Multiple Languages as NCCN Expands Arabic Resources

New Arabic-language resources for health care providers, caregivers, and people with cancer, help set cancer care standards worldwide based on the latest evidence and expert-consensus.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Dec. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The National Comprehensive Cancer Network^® (NCCN^®)—an alliance of leading cancer centers in the United States—today announced the publication of newly-translated recommendations for treating colon cancer in Arabic, plus updates in Chinese, French, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish. The NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines^®) are the most frequently-updated guidelines in any area of medicine. They include the latest evidence and expert-consensus based recommendations from multidisciplinary panels of experts. NCCN Guidelines are used by healthcare providers worldwide to optimize treatment in order to improve cancer outcomes.

The Arabic translation of the NCCN Guidelines for Colon Cancer represents an important new language for NCCN’s growing library of International Adaptations and Translations—which already exist in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. NCCN is also expanding its patient information resources with the recent Arabic translation of the NCCN Guidelines for Patients^®: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

The newly published Arabic resources build on the English-language adaptations of NCCN Guidelines specifically tailored for the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region led by the MENA-NCCN Regional Coordinating Center. Recently, Kanan Mamdouh Alshammari, MD, Department of Oncology, King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital, Ministry of National Guard, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was appointed as the Director of the MENA-NCCN Regional Coordinating Center. In 2022, the MENA-NCCN Regional Coordinating Center will develop three new adapted NCCN Guidelines for the MENA region focused on Ovarian Cancer; Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment for Breast, Ovarian, and Pancreatic; and Palliative Care.

Africa CDC Concerned with New Wave of COVID Infections

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is expressing concern at the latest wave of COVID infections as the continent enters the holiday season.Africa CDC Director John Nkengasong says they are pushing African countries to consider vaccine mandates.

Africa is seeing an increase in COVID infections, according to the figures released by the Africa CDC Thursday.

The continent recorded 253,000 positive cases over the past week, a 21% increase from the previous week and a 14% death increase.

Addressing journalists online, Africa CDC head John Nkengasong said they are concerned with the rising COVID cases.

“We continue to see this wave come and go but the very concerning element here is that the fourth wave and potentially the fifth wave is starting just before we go into the holiday season and that’s very concerning to me. Last year we saw the wave coming up after the holiday seasons and not before the holiday seasons, so we should just keep that in mind,” he said.

Since the omicron coronavirus variant was identified in South Africa last month, 22 countries have reported its presence in their communities.

More Africans are getting vaccinated, 325 million in all, but the large majority of people have not received the first jab.

Nkengasong says every country needs to launch a vaccination effort.

“We have a long way to go, at least we are making progress, we need a massive campaign, a massive campaign at every country level, so everyone should get out there especially with what we now know with new variants coming. You cannot talk of even a booster if people have not received their first doses of vaccine. Our campaign should be pushing people who have not received their first dose to receive the first dose,” he said.

Some countries like Kenya are banning unvaccinated people from accessing government services and public places, in order to push more people to get vaccinated.

Speaker Kumba appeals to W. Equatoria communities to open new chapter of forgiveness, unity

The Speaker of South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly earlier this week appealed to the communities of Western Equatoria State to forgive each other and start a new chapter of love and unity.

While addressing the people during the centenary celebrations of the Episcopal Church’s Internal Province of Amadi at the Lui Diocese in Mundri East on Monday, Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba appealed to them forgive each other so that peace can return to the state.

She advised that the violence which took place in Tambura County should not recur or happen in any other county of Western Equatoria State.

“What happened in Tambura should not happen in any other county of Western Equatoria State or any county in South Sudan. It should end there and be resolved there,” Speaker Kumba cautioned. “We should not be quarreling among ourselves. Let us forget the past and think of the future of our children. Our president is working together with his deputies so let us also do the same.”

The presidential affairs minister, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, who represented and read a message from President Salva Kiir, urged the people of Western Equatoria to support the implementation of the peace agreement so that services can be delivered to the state.

“The peace has come and it is going throughout the corners of South Sudan. I think this is the responsibility, not only the church but all of us as Christians, including our Muslim citizens,” Minister Marial said. “We have to go out and say peace has come and we have to protect it because it is the future of our children.”

He delivered a donation of 10 Million SSP from President Kiir to the occasion and said the latter pledged to tarmac the highway through Western Equatoria, complete the Bishop’s residence, and renovate Lui hospital.

“From Juba to Mundri, Yambio, Tambura to Wau will be tarmacked and the president has donated to this occasion 10 Million SSP. Thirdly, he (president) is going to finish the house of Bishop and install a solar system,” Minister Marial said. Number four, renovation of Lui Hospital and doctors houses will have to be maintained and five, there will be a standby generator which will be provided by the government. These are the things the president told me to tell you.”

For his part, Western Equatoria State Governor Gen. Alfred Futuyo said the state is relatively peaceful apart from a few pockets of insecurity caused by holdout rebel groups who have to be told to come home for the sake of peace.

“Our state is now peaceful and that is why I came 170 miles from Yambio to Lui on-road and not by plane. That shows that there is peace,” Gen. Futuyo said. “There are pockets of insecurity caused by the National Salvation Front (NAS) around the borders of Jambo and we are appealing to the national government to expedite the graduation of the unified forces. If they are deployed, even those who are in the bush will come out to join the organized army.”

He appealed to those still fighting to come back home and work for peace.

“Blocking roads, ambushing, and robbing travelers will not help. Burning cars has no benefits, but if you come home you can join with the people, be promoted, and work for peace. This is what we want,” Gen. Futuyo said.

Uror County: Gunmen raid 2,500 cows, 2000 recovered

Over 2,500 cows were stolen during a raid by a group of armed men in Uror County of Jonglei state on Tuesday, local officials said.

Uror County Commissioner Tang Chatim told Radio Tamazuj that the armed raiders raided the cattle while they were being grazed in Paluony village after attacking the local youth on Tuesday afternoon.

“The incident happened on Tuesday at 2 pm. Those attackers initially overpowered the local youth and went away with 2, 500 cows,” Commissioner Chatim said. “Later, they were pursued and 2000 cows were recovered. Two of the attackers were shot dead and they were later identified as Murle tribesmen.”

He pointed out that the local youth are still pursuing the attackers whom he said are heading towards the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) in a bid to recover the rest of the animals.

The county police inspector, Lt. Col. Gatbel Machar, condemned the attack and said the raiders are being pursued in order to recover the stolen animals.

“Two youth from the Pibor side were killed. The local youth are following them to try and bring back the stolen animals,” Col. Gatbel said.

For his part, John Amor, the Pibor County commissioner, said he is not aware of the incident because the areas bordering Jonglei State lack communication network.

“I have not heard about it because there is no network in Likuangule and Gumurk,: Amor said.

Cattle raids are common among the communities in Greater Jonglei.

Earlier this month, officials in the state capital, Bor, warned that the security situation was worsening in parts of the state as Christmas approaches.
