Oman Sail welcomed around 112 young sailors from across the world to the 2015 Musannah Race Week (MRW) on Sunday for a week of training and racing as the inaugural Optimist Class Champions League began at the Musannah Sports City.
Flying in from as far afield as Europe, Asia, South America and Africa, the youngsters who are all Optimist champions back home spent their first day in Oman getting used to Musannah’s sailing facilities and taking a lowdown on fellow competitors.
They also began their Optimist Champions League campaigns with a coaching session.
The field comprises 39 of Oman’s top, home-grown sailors, including members of the Oman National Youth Squad and those from Oman Sail’s Omantel Youth Programme.
One of Oman’s prominent participants at the event is Samiha al Riyami, who is among 25 girls competing alongside the boys on the race track from Tuesday-Saturday.
The first three days of the MRW will be spent in coaching and Corporate Personal Development activities before racing starts on Wednesday. The action concludes on Saturday.
