MUSCAT: The squid fishing season began on Saturday and will continue till the end of January, 2016. Fishermen in the governorates of South Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar usually fish in groups for this marine creature, which is an important contributor to the economy.
Oman exports to several Asian and European countries that have large market for squid. Squad fishing is carried out annually in the coastal villages of these three governorates. Salim bin Sultan al Araimi, director of the Fisheries Development Department in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali said that squid is available from August until the end of January.
He explained that squid fishing has been delayed this season in most coastal villages in South Sharqiyah due to climatic conditions. Last year, the season began in mid-July. According to Araimi, each boat lands 70-80kg squid per day.
