Sohar took a crucial solitary away-goal lead against Rustaq in the first-leg of the Omantel Professional League (OPL) playoff match on Thursday.
The second leg of the match between the 12th-placed OPL team, Sohar, and third-placed team in the first division, Rustaq, will be held in Sohar on Sunday.
The match will bring the curtains down on the domestic football season with the winner earning a berth in the OPL. Al Arouba clinched a grand double, winning the OPL and the His Majesty’s Cup titles.
Also on Thursday, Al Nahda edged past nine-time champion Dhofar 3-2 at the Saada Sports Complex in Salalah to finish eighth in the OPL with 36 points, while Dhofar ended at fifth place with 38 points.
The match was replayed after the Oman Football Association’s (OFA) Court of Arbitration had handed a verdict in favour of Al Nahda, which had appealed against the OFA’s original decision to dock six points and give the match in favour of Dhofar for a last-minute pullout.
The court decided to reinstate the six points and ordered the match to be replayed. It also slapped a fine of RO10,000 on the OFA.
