H H Sayyida Basma al Said, mental health counsellor, psychotherapist and founder of Whispers of Serenity Clinic, was recognised for her contribution in the field of child abuse and mental health awareness in Asia and Middle East, at the 5th GR8! Women Awards in Dubai, recently.
Sayyida Basma said, “The award was a surprise. One day I got an e-mail from the organisers of GR8! Awards which said they had read about my work online and so wanted to appreciate my work and efforts.”
“I think these awards are a way of showing appreciation to people who have worked for long in their respective fields.”
“A little appreciation goes a long way. I have been pursuing my field persistently and have felt the need to raise my voice to spread awareness on this issue and help people by providing solutions. Mental health was an issue on which people in Oman would not speak about earlier. But now, I am glad we have spread sufficient awareness and people are coming forward to speak about it.”
She added, “I would like to thank His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said who has done so much for women so that we can all take initiatives and can play an important role in the society. I would also like to thank my family for all their support.”
Sayyida Basma has been working in the field of mental health and fighting child abuse for the past 14 years in the country. She runs the Whispers of Serenity clinic in Azaiba.
The other dignitaries who received the award included, Bollywood celebrities Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Nimrat Kaur, and choreographer Pony Verma.
GR8! Women Awards are given every year by the Indian Television Academy.
