The fifth edition of the annual EFG Sailing Arabia-The Tour (SATT) will begin at The Wave, Muscat on Sunday with a total of 11 teams vying for top honours in the 760 nautical-mile contest.
The 12-day event, which will conclude in Manama, Bahrain, will get off to a start after an opening ceremony at the Oman Sail headquarters on Sunday morning. H H Sayyid bin Fahd al Said, Assistant Secretary General for the Cabinet of the Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, will preside over the launch ceremony.
All the 11 teams have put final touches to their Farr30 boats following a series of short training races over the past four days. While the European teams were getting used to the weather, the local crews, including some teams
comprising students, have been practising their manoeuvres off the The Wave, Muscat marina.
“It has been a useful exercise,” said Ahmed al Mamari, the Omani skipper of Team Omifco. “Many of my teammates are new to sailing and have had very little training, but we are ready. We have a lot of work to do on our manoeuvres. But we did a speed test against a couple of the other boats in training and we were better than them, which is an encouraging sign.”
He added, “There are some good skippers in this year’s edition and we hope to learn a lot from them. We are all very excited.”
With light breeze predicted in Muscat on Sunday, the teams are facing the possibility of a delayed start.
The first of the six legs will see the teams compete over a 100 nautical-mile journey to Sohar. The fleet will then head out to Ras al Khaimah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha before concluding in Manama on February 26.EFG Sailing Arabia-The Tour (SATT)
