Saad: To reach compromise over presidential file

FEBRUARY 26, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY LEBANON) Democratic Gathering MP Antoine Saad on Thursday pushed the Lebanese officials to handle the presidential dossier as a top priority and to reconsider the national dimension of their stances.

“We have been waiting for a Christian-Christian agreement for a long time, but to no avail,” the lawmaker said in a statement.

“It is no longer tolerable to persist in a state of presidential void — a thing which is a threat to the republic and the presidency, not to mention paralyses the country and throws it towards the unknown,” the MP said.

Moreover, he mentioned the impossibility of regional circumstances to help resolve the presidential file in Lebanon, “especially in light of Iran’s policies which seek to control, expand, and connect Lebanon to its axis.”

He noted that the regional circumstances have urged the Lebanese to seek an internal agreement on a new president who serves national interests best.

As for discussions over the cabinet’s work mechanism, Saad said that it’s impossible to keep the cabinet going with the signature of 24 ministers, opting instead for Prime Minister Tammam Salam’s proposal.

“It’s sheer logic and an apt solution to the cabinet’s ordeal, especially at the absence of a Lebanese president.”
