Rahi: It is unacceptable to eliminate names of expatriates from electoral lists

APRIL 27, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) The Maronite Diaspora Institute held a ceremony at Raphael Hotel in Paris, in honor of Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rahi who is currently visiting France, in the presence of foreign minister, Gibran Bassil and Minister of Education and Higher Learning Elias Bou Saab.

Bassil, who applauded the role played by the Maronite Diaspora Institution, said that “the State, through its constitutional institutions, does not recognize the rights of expatriates.”

“The need for Christian and national unity is urgent,” he said, hoping that Christian unity is translated into a law on the recovery of nationality.

The Maronite Patriarch, for his part, praised the role played by Minister Bassil at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, uttering surprise over the delay in the approval of the law on the recovery of nationality.

He then stressed the importance of national unity and the attachment to the homeland, saying it is unacceptable to remove the names of expatriate from the voters’ list.

Patriarch Rahi deemed necessary to preserve the Lebanese Christian presence in Lebanon and the Middle East.
