Portolano vows to continue working on achieving UNIFIL goals

JANUARY 29, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Thursday held a memorial service to honor the Spanish peacekeeper, who was killed yesterday at a UN post near Ghajar village.

The soldier, Cpl Francisco Javier Soria Toledo, had been serving in the UNIFIL force since November 2014.

In a word delivered on the occasion, UNIFIL Commander, General Luciano Portolano, pledged to continue working unremittingly to achieve the UNIFIL goals and assume its mission.

He has earlier expressed condolences for the family of the late peacekeeper. “This tragic incident reminds us of the mission shouldered by UN members who are working away from home, amid hard circumstances, to make peace,” Portolano said.

Furthermore, he sternly condemned the “dangerous” violation of UNSC resolution 1701.

The UNIFIL has opened a probe into the incident.
