MUSCAT: More than 300 pharmacists, assistant pharmacists, students and healthcare professionals from Oman and GCC countries are participating in the Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2015, which began on Wednesday.

Organised by Oman Medical College, the conference, titled ‘Emerging Role of Pharmacists in Healthcare System’, began under the patronage of Dr Ali bin Saud al Bemani, vice chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University.

H E Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Sarmi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Higher Education and Sheikh Salim Saeed al Fannah al Araimi, chairman, Galfar, were among the other dignitaries who attended the event.

Ph Nusaiba Habib Mohammed, director general of medical supplies, Ministry of Health delivered the opening address.

The opening day of the conference saw lectures, workshops, exhibitions and presentations in the field of pharmacy.

The keynote address on Pharm D programme was delivered by Dr Lucinda L Maine, executive vice president and CEO, American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy.

Dr Ali al Sheheri and Dr Mohammed al Jofan from Saudi Arabia spoke on the future of pharmacy and the importance of pharma. Professor Viville Stephen, University of Strasbourg, France gave tips on strategies in management of male infertility due to genetic factors.

The session on Pharmacovigilance saw discussion on drug induced allergic disorders, adverse drug reactions, medication safety, patient counselling among others. The conference will conclude on Thursday.
