Old tenants warn against extortion

JANUARY 24, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) The Ad-hoc Body of Old Tenants, warned in a public statement today against landlord extortion meted to old tenants by unqualified persons hired by tenement owners to delude them into believing that the so-called tenants” law took effect as of Dec. 28 of last year.

Old tenants therewith, urged juridical bodies to prosecute all those persons found at pains of threatening tenants with eviction into becoming internal refugees. Tenants recalled the veto put by a number of ministers, deputies on certain clauses and articles of the so-called new tenements’ law on ground of evicting people into the street and subsequently destabilizing both society and economy.

The Ad-hoc Body of Old Tenants called for mass mobilization to thwart what it termed “the conspiracy of evicting old tenants” and implored government officials and parliamentarians to preserve public dignity as part of safeguarding basic human rights.
