MUNICIPALITY SAYS NO TO SHADED CAR PARKS OUTSIDE RESIDENTIAL PLOTS MEASURING OVER 600SQM

MUSCAT: The Muscat Municipality in a decision has said that owners of houses built on 600sq m and above cannot have shaded car parks outside their boundary walls.

Tuesday’s decision follows a feasibility study on whether such home owners should be granted the permission.

Muscat Daily had first reported about the study in November last year.

The municipality also issued a set of other rules on building shaded parkings outside residences.

It said the residential property should be a villa or a compound with not more than two housing units.

The municipality said that regular maintenance of the shaded parkings will be the responsibility of the property owner.

The shades should not affect traffic movement and cannot come up on main roads, scenic roads or dual carriageways.

The municipality also stipulated that the shaded car park should be at least 6m from the road. It can be built along the wall to prevent it from being too close to the road, allow for easy parking and avoid traffic disruption.

Each parking slot should measure 3mx6m, the rule says.

The decision to carry out the study was taken after the municipality started getting requests from owners of residential plots measuring 600sq m.

The study took into consideration aesthetics, public parking spaces, traffic movement and public convenience.
