MUSCAT: Muscat Municipality has distributed 500 trash bins to houses in Greater Muttrah, Wadi Kabir and Darsait. In the next phase, the civic body will distribute waste bins in the eastern region of Muscat.
The distribution is part of municipality’s door-to-door waste collection initiative launched in 2013, which aims to get rid of huge trash containers kept on the streets and keep the city clean, stated a press release. Municipality distributed 4,500 containers last year and plans to give out 2,500 more this year.
Under the initiative, municipality workers collect waste from bins left outside the houses and transfer it to landfill sites, thereby preventing spread of diseases caused by rodents and insects. Officials from the civic body’s department of health affairs are distributing pamphlets to inform citizens and residents about the timing of waste collection.
Municipality has reserved Monday and Wednesday for collection of large waste such as unwanted furniture and trees. It has also urged people to ensure that such refuse is kept at designated spots so that workers can pick it up easily.
