Minister of Interior visits Roumieh: no weapons in prison

JANUARY 13, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Minister of Interior and Municipalities Nuhad Al-Mashnouq visited Building ‘B’ in Roumieh prison where he was briefed on the progress of work after the security measures that got implemented yesterday.

“I came to check on the building and figure how it could be turned into a prison with the least minimum of humane requirements. This is the only reason for my visit,” Mashnouq said, noting that prisoners were transferred to a better building.

“There are no weapons inside the prison. The whole Roumieh prison ‘saga’ was incorrect,” the Minister asserted.

He thanked in this regard “all those who have established the fund of the Rehabilitation of Prisons Association, on top of them the governor of Lebanon’s Central Bank, Riad Salameh, the Banks Association led by Dr. Francois Bassil and the Chairman of Beirut Chamber of Commerce, Muhammad Chucair.”

“We hope we could turn this prison, with the little money that has been donated, to a humane place for prisoners, terrorists or non-terrorists, and we hope this would be done within three months maximum,” Mashnouq concluded.
