Mikati pushes for election of President, agreement over cabinet dossiers

FEBRUARY 19, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Former Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Thursday ratcheted up the pressure on both sides of the Lebanese divide to speedily elect a new Lebanese President and to reach agreement over the many standing cabinet files.

“Agreement could be reached by relying on the currently approved formulas or by opting to abide by the provisions of the Constitution, in particular Article 56 thereof,” Mikati said in a statement issued today.

“We are entering into a maze of new interpretations that would inflame sectarian and political alignments and leave undesirable repercussions on the future of the constitutional institutions,” Mikati’s statement warned.
