OCTOBER 26, 2014 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Former Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, declared Sunday evening “lifting the cover off anyone who fails to acknowledge the State,” adding that “Tripoli is under the rooftop of the State and fully supports the Lebanese Army, having no connection to terrorism whatsoever.”
In an interview to “New TV” Channel over ongoing clashes in Tripoli, Mikati considered that “the call for Jihad by certain sides is totally refused, since Sunnites can never stand in the face of the State.” He added that “Sunnites have no choice but the State, its Army and all security institutions, on condition that they are fair in dealing with all Lebanese.”
“There have certainly been some sides in the past years encouraging people to take to the streets, which turned out to be an act against the State as a whole, and not only against the previous cabinet,” Mikati indicated. He added that “whoever pushed the people to resort to the streets cannot contain the situation easily now.”
“The situation in Tripoli is tragic, and the main concern at this juncture is to keep civilians safely away from confrontations taking place,” stated Mikati.
“It is said that Tripoli provides a suitable environment for terrorists, but I would like to reiterate that Tripoli is an Arab and Muslim neighborhood, and has nothing to do with terrorism nor does it accept to be an incubator for terrorist acts,” stressed Mikati.
