Landlords hold tenants responsible for failure to implement the new tenements’ law

JANUARY 25, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Having met at Comfort Hotel in Hazmieh today, the Committee of landlords backed by sworn attorneys, held old tenants fully responsible for failure to implement the new Tenements’ law which went into force as of the 28th of December 2014.

Being perfectly aware that the said law, bylaws and provisions of the Tenements’ law are irrevocable, the Landlords’ Committee stresses the full operationality of the law as attested by judges at the courts of First Instance.

Also having met with Wajih Damirji of the Old Tenants’ Committee, a joint delegation met with Prime Minister Tamam Salam and implored him to set up the Poor Tenants’ Fund in order to assist in the speedy relocation of old tenants into new tenements built for the purpose. The Landlords’ Committee also absolved itself from undertaking any substantial repairs in their buildings, real estate or tenements.

As Landlords intend to press charges against old tenants before the court of law, it expresses willingness to resort to all means possible including staging of sit-ins and other moves deemed necessary to implement the new law by recovering their old tenements.

Furthermore, calls upon old tenants to reject the new law will be regarded by landlords as tantamount to a form of illegal squatting and forceful occupation of tenements, the Landlords’ Committee concluded.
