FEBRUARY 17, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) In a visit to south Lebanon today Tuesday, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Mrs. Sigrid Kaag, met with Members of Parliament in the southern city of Tyre after consultations with UNIFIL Force Commander Major-General Luciano Portolano and touring the Blue Line area with UNIFIL.
“I would like to thank the Members of Parliament of Tyre for receiving me today. It was a very useful meeting in which we discussed the political, security and socio-economic situation in the area,” Mrs. Kaag said after the meeting. It was the Special Coordinator’s first official visit to south Lebanon since assuming her current position.
“As with each region of Lebanon, the south has particular needs and challenges. Working closely with local and national authorities, the UN is committed to helping meet those needs. Strong and effective institutions of the State are an essential element in the delivery of assistance and support,” she added.
The Special Coordinator noted the strong relations and longstanding cooperation between the United Nations and the residents and authorities in south Lebanon.
Earlier, the Special Coordinator toured the Blue Line. “We hope all parties continue to exercise maximum calm and restraint, refrain from any action that could undermine the stability of the area and act responsibility to prevent any escalation in line with their commitment to resolution 1701,” she said.
