Kaag meets Bahia Hariri: We are in contact with all parties to calm situation in South

JANUARY 29, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) MP Bahia Hariri received on Thursday the new Personal Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Lebanon Sigrid Kaag with talks featuring high on issues of common interest and ways to strengthen and activate cooperation.

The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on the general situation and the latest security developments in Lebanon mainly in the South.

Kaag praised the role played by Hariri to preserve stability in Sidon and the neighborhood.

Asked about the recent developments on the southern border, Kaag said after a meeting “I did not go to the border yet, but the United Nations issued a statement yesterday to denounce violence and any breach of Resolution 1701. The Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the violence and called on the parties to exercise restraint and understand the utmost importance of resolution 1701.”

“We are communicating with all parties to calm the situation and to emphasize the importance of security and consolidation of economic and social stability in Lebanon. There are a number of challenges facing Lebanon and threatening its stability and that must be addressed seriously. The regional crisis should not affect Lebanon, and here comes my role in communicating with all parties and Lebanese officials, on top of them Prime Minister Tammam Salam,” she said.
