Jumblatt pushes for modern prison in compliance with human rights

APRIL 20, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Democratic Gathering Leader, Walid Jumblatt, said on Monday that it was high time a modern prison was built in compliance with the minimum requirements of human rights.

“The prisoner is a human being who has the right to enjoy a stay in a prison that enjoys the bare minimum to serve as a reformatory, a thing which is totally missing amid the dire conditions of prison cells,” Jumblatt said in his weekly interview accorded to Al-Anbaa weekly, anticipating more and more prison riots and chaos to come.

He said that the state was fully capable of handling the matter via the implementation of prison projects that had been drafted and stopped years ago due to the lack of sufficient funds.

“This is a top priority. The state should make special allocations to resolve this matter,” Jumblatt added.

Touching on the lengthy presidential void, the PSP leader said he awaited some sort of miracle to bring about a new President.

“This matter has become farfetched due to some of the political leaders refusal of a consensual president and rejection to settle for any sort of compromise,” he added.
