May 04, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Information Minister Ramzi Jreij called for “liberating press from all constraints that deteriorate it, especially amidst the economic crisis which the media sector is suffering from. If you want press to develop you must take your hands off it.”
The UNESCO Beirut office, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), on Monday held a symposium in favor of the development of press, under the patronage of Minister Jreij, in presence of head of the Press Club Bassam Abu Zeid, National News Agency director Laure Sleiman Saab, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag, former chief of Press Syndicate Mohammad Baalbaki, and others, at the UNESCO in Beirut.
Kaag gave a word on the occasion, calling for a better role for woman in media. She described Lebanon as “the minaret in the field of freedom of expression.”
Saab, for her part, highlighted the important role of media in affecting the directions of public opinion, indicating that media resources “have become a fundamental part of peoples and societies’ lives.”
