Ghattas Khoury from The Hague: Hariri backed 1559 without implementing part on Resistance

JANUARY 16, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Former lawmaker Ghattas Khoury on Friday said before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in The Hague that former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri backed UN resolution 1559 but without implementing the internal part relevant to the Resistance.

“Resolution 1559 was issued on the background of the US Congress decision to punish Syria. General Michel Aoun sought the issuance of this resolution in an attempt to curb the Syrian hegemony over Lebanon and return from exile,” he indicated.

He added that reoslution 1559 called for removing the weapons of militias and that Hariri used to ask, through his friends in the international community, to leave this matter to the Lebanese authorities “because he did not want the country to enter a conflict with armed sides.”

“Resolution 1559 was issued one day after the extension of the mandate of president Emile Lahoud,” he noted.

“Hariri sought the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon and then agreement among the Lebanon,” he went on to say.

He continued that the government of former Prime Minister Omar Karami was formed in order to “liquidate” Hariri.
