Geagea: Action against Zouk plant will not stop until solution is found

APRIL 27, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said at a press conference in Maarab that the Zouk power plant is an old problem that goes tens of years back and which has been the reason behind pulmonary diseases affecting citizens who live in the region.

“The factory’s harm reaches Kesserwan’s mountain area, as well as Beirut and Byblos,” he explained, assuring that the action against Zouk plant will only come to an end when a definitive solution is found.

“The equipments in Zouk plant are 35 years old, which has been causing toxic emissions from generators, hence leading to damage to the public health. (…) The latest move came as a result of pressure from the citizens and we will pursue it until all the righteous demands are fulfilled,” he pledged.

Geagea said “the solution is that the plant be transferred to Salaata because the factory there is equipped with the necessary pipes or, maybe, leave the Zouk plant functioning, but on gas.”

In this context, he urged Prime Minister Tammam Salam to intervene to stop the expansion of the plant.
