His Majesty’s Cup champion Fanja and Salalah giant Dhofar will clash for the inaugural Mazda Professional Cup title at the Seeb Sports Stadium on Thursday.
Both the teams overcame stiff resistance in the semifinals, which was played on Saturday.
Fanja managed to record a narrow solitary goal win over Al Shabab at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex while Dhofar edged past a gritty Sohar at the Sohar Sports Complex, winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra-time.
The inaugural edition of Mazda Cup featured all the 14 teams playing in the Omantel Professional League (OPL).
The tournament has witnessed a successful partnership between the Oman Football Association (OFA) and Mazda Oman.
A senior spokesperson of Mazda Oman said, “Mazda Oman has been closely associated with the game of football, as the proud partner of OFA and owner of the Mazda Cup. We are committed to the game right from grassroots clubs to the national team to keep the game alive and kicking.”
He added that the winner’s trophy has been specially designed keeping in mind the spirited nature of the brand that resonates well with the game.
