Berri: Even trash became a sectarian matter

July 29, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) House Speaker, Nabi Berri, held on Wednesday a meeting with a number of deputies who relayed to the press the Speaker’s discontent with the way the garbage crisis was handled, stating that even trash has been “secterianized.”

According to Berri, the crisis could have been solved a long time ago by simple means. “Unfortunately, things escalated for no good reason, like everything else.”

“Institutions must handle their responsibilities and take appropriate decisions in all matters for the sake of public wellbeing. This assumes, as we have always called for, fortifying the work of institutions rather than hindering it.”

The Speaker also noted that following the Iranian nuclear agreement, Lebanon and the region were passing through an extraordinary historical transitional phase. This called for dealing with matters wisely to protect the country during this period.

Berri received a number of letters congratulating him on Eid el Fitr, namely from Palestinian President, Mahmud Abbas, Chairman of the Iranian Shura Council Ali Larijani, Ruler of Dubai, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the Algerian National People’s Assembly Mohamed Al Arabi Wild Khalifa, head of the Algerian National Assembly Abdelkader Ben Saleh, and Secretary General of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Nejad-Hosseinian.
